James Garner Movie #1
(Please read my reviews of Sunset, SpaceCowboys, and Twilight, and take a
look at my reviews of James Garner Westerns)
Synopsis: Spunky
ranch-hand and loveable old druggist embark on creepy January-December romance.
Blurb From the VHS
Jacket: “The last thing Emma Moriarty expected to find in Eunice, Arizona
was love. So how does she wind up the object of MURPHY’S ROMANCE? Sally Field
and James Garner star in this endearing comic love story from director Martin
Ritt (Norma Rae).”
What Did I Learn?:
Apparently, there are plenty of jobs available for high school students, and
young women without much education in small town America.
You Might Like This
Movie If: You're all in favour of older men dating younger women.
Really?: 1) So,
um…the movie is titled “Murphy’s Romance,” and there’s no sign of Murphy
(Garner) on the VHS jacket? 2) Wow….you have to be pretty low to cheat during a
family-and-friends game of cards with no money changing hands. I realize this
scene establishes Bobby Jack’s character, but who would do that? 3) See: "What Did I Learn?"
Rating: Murphy’s
Romance is a pleasant (if slightly forgettable) romantic comedy featuring
likeable performances by Garner and Field and some snappy dialogue. It's a nice little movie, but the plot tends to meander, and it loses much of its
focus once Bobby Jack leaves the stage. 7.5/10 stars.
