L.A. Story (1991)

L.A. Movie #2

Synopsis: Wacky weatherman woos winsome woman, sees silly, supportive signpost, bangs buxom, bubble-headed blonde bimbo.

Blurb From the VHS Jacket: “Steve Martin is Harris Telemacher, a wacky television weatherman, who thinks his life is perfect, except for an erratic relationship with a style-conscious girlfriend (Marilu Henner). Then, one bright and smoggy L.A. day, an electronic freeway sign changes his life, when its advice leads him to a frivolous romance with a beautiful blond (Sarah Jessica Parker) and, ultimately, to true love with the woman of his dreams (Victoria Tennant).

What Did I Learn?: The chances are pretty good that a girl named “SanDee*” is going to be a bit of a flake.

You Might Like This Movie If: You wish that L.A. was a bit more like this, than this place.

Really?: L.A. Story is a fantastical film with a strange sense of humour, so it isn’t mean to be taken all that seriously; I can overlook the first day of Spring being the beginning of shooting season on the freeway, a magical signpost, or traffic signals that read: “like, walk, ok?”. Still, I had a bit of trouble believing SanDee* (Parker) would be interested in Harris, or that his shallow and affluent friends would want to hang out with a guy who drives a Chrysler.

Rating: L.A. Story is an intelligently-written (kudos to Steve Martin), feel-good movie about life among the rich and beautiful in the early 1990s. While I like this movie, I’m not crazy about it – the humour is quite hit-or-miss and there’s far too much Enya on the soundtrack for my taste. 7.5/10 stars.
