Christmas Movie #3
Synopsis: Hyperactive baby-talking red monster nearly ruins Christmas. (Don’t laugh – he ruined
Sesame Street!)
Blurb From the VHS
Jacket: “Can there be such a thing as too much Christmas? Find out.. when a
magical Christmas wish is granted and Elmo gets to see what the world would be
like every day were Christmas! You’ll enjoy lots of songs and holiday cheer
with Elmo and discover his new friend Lightning, the reindeer, and discover for
yourself why Christmas is best kept to one day a year!”
What Did I Learn?:
Don’t ever attempt to purchase anything from Grover.
You Might Like This
Movie If: You know that Elmo is nothing but trouble.
Really?: Who had the bright idea of getting Harvey Fierstein to sing a musical number? his musical voice is atrocious.
Rating: If
Christmas Eve on Sesame Street is the gold standard for Children’s Television
Workshop holiday offerings, Elmo Saves Christmas is a big lump of coal. Sure, I’ll
admit it – I can’t stand Elmo, but this special has a number of problems (see: “Really?”):
it’s predictable, the special effects are bargain-basement, and while CEOSS had
a message about the importance of love and friendship during Christmas, this
one feels as though it was slapped together to cash in on Elmo’s popularity. I'll give ESC a few stars because I liked the Grover segments, but I
cannot recommend this movie. 4.5/10 stars.
Would It Work For a
Bad Movie Night?: Maybe – take a
drink every time Elmo’s name is mentioned (Warning: he often refers to himself
in the third person)
