Midnight Run (1988)

Synopsis: Rough-and-tumble slob slowly, and grudgingly bonds with sensitive neat freak during series of cross-country misadventures. Oh wait – that’s the Synopsis for The Odd Couple II

Blurb From the VHS Jacket: “Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin are trying to get from New York to L.A. the hard way... ...with each other.”

What Did I Learn?: Apparently, Americans living in flyover country are incredibly gullible. If you ever find yourself short of money in the heartland, your best course of action is to make a beeline for the nearest bar, pose as an FBI agent, claim that somebody has been passing bad $20 bills, and then confiscate any you find in the cash register till as “evidence.”

Really?: So wait, Serrano’s big plan is to meet with Walsh, grab the computer discs, hand over Mardukas, and have the two of them whacked in the middle of a busy airport, surrounded by thousands of witnesses and security cameras?

Rating: Midnight Run is a little implausible in places (see: “What Did I Learn?” and “Really?”), but it’s an enjoyable action-comedy, and the humour works because Grodin and De Niro share some great comedic chemistry. Highly recommended. 9/10 stars.
